General Information

The town of Alberton is an historical town located in the East Rand of Johannesburg in the Ekurhuleni region of Gauteng, South Africa. In 2005 the town celebrated its 100 year anniversary with the first official post office built in 1926 and the town hall built in 1938. Alberton is steeped in history and its suburb and street names show this, the street names in the Alberton North suburb were named after the Voortrekker heroes.

Alberton is centrally located with access roads to all major highways in the province, as a result of this the town is mostly residential with most of its residents commuting to the surrounding cities and suburbs for work. The town itself has grown steadily over the years and today is made up of 18 suburbs: Alberante, Albermarle, Albertsdal, Alberton North, Alrode, Brackendowns, Brackenhurst, Eden Park, Florentia, Mayberry Park, Meyersdal, New Redruth, Palm Ridge, Randhart, Raceview, South Crest, Thokoza, and Verwoerdpark.

The climate is mild, being sunny and dry for most of the year with winter being the sunniest time of the year. The town has seen snowfall a handful of times over the years, most recently in 2007.

Activities

There are a number of sports and recreation clubs and facilities in the area including tennis, rugby, boxing, wrestling, cricket, netball, hockey, soccer, and bowls. Alberton also houses the Reading Country Club and golf course.Other things to do in Alberton include a number of shopping centres and the nearby East Rand Mall that contains over 180 shops and restaurants as well as a movie theatre with nine cinemas.
